Anti-clockwise I ran backwards seven times in seven circles circling, I held my breath several times
I heard the sound of the devils electric windows ascending, and his car keys jangling
In his right hand he held a thermos flask
Charcoal grey farahs creased beneath a zipped up anorak
Wearing Taiwanese boots made of Taiwanese leather,
Measured five ft eleven, the devil was Caucasian

He unscrewed the cap and poured the soup out in dribs & drabs which dripped around the perimeter of the opening to the thermos flask
My left arm started shaking, his outstretched hand approaching
His hair combed from left to right above NHS spectacles
He knew the kings of England and he quoted fights historical
He leaned forwards and he whispered softly to me
He told me what the flavour was,
Minestrone

I took a sip and as it trickled down my throat i saw Mephistopheles giggle to himself
The vauxhall cavalier’s electric windows descending, windscreen wipers wiping
Ash flicked from one of twenty cigarettes that sat next to the devil’s picture book above the cassette deck
At regular intervals his finger tapped the steering wheel
Humming the chorus to pal rakes and the prophets

Semi-detached, the devil’s house was pebble dashed
Along the main artery from the roundabout to the cul-de-sac
The wallpaper painter geraniums in recurring floral patterns
From the skirting board to the coving footsteps tap tap tapping
Watching flies draw parallelograms beneath light fixtures
Over three thousand paperbacks stacked of science fiction
A two bar electric fire coughed up chewed up splinters
Written on the window with the devil’s little finger
Minestrone

Seven starlings descended in curls from chandeliers which flew in a figure of eight around my ankles
From sycamore trees double winged seeds corkscrewed down like helicopter blades
I picked up the four of clubs...
